Archives Signature Series - Hit or Miss ?

At the end of 2015 Topps launched the Archives Signature Series buyback set. To me it seems like a random selection of "old" cards with both a signature from the player as well as a Archives stamp and with a very limited print run. I even came across cards from 2014 and early 2015, not really "Archives" material in my view given how recent they were issued.

Clearly, with a range of Glavine cards present in the set a supercollector like me can only do one thing and that is chase them all ! Here's two I was able to pick up, one of the 80ties Bowman cards and one of the older Heritage cards.

They look nice being in a protected casing etc but I still have a little bit mixed feelings about this set. What do you guys think ?

  1. I don't have to much of a problem with sets like this. They seem better suited for cherry picking on eBay rather than box busting. I tend to favor the Leaf buybacks because they focus a lot more on obscure players. At least they are on card autos!

  2. I don't think I could have said it any better than Matt, unless I was dressed as Marilyn Monroe and singing it breathlessly like I was wishing Kennedy "Happy Bithday".

And you are welcome for that mental image of me dressed as Marilyn. Enjoy the nightmares.

  3. I like the set, but I hope it is a one-shot deal or that future releases have completely different checklists. I picked up a few cards of some of my favorite players on eBay. It's not the kind of thing I would bust boxes of, though.

  5. I like the concept of reusing old base cards and signing them and rereleasing them to the masses.
I don't like the concept of one card per box. I understand that this is the high end baseball card realm, but I don't and probably can't comprehend why someone would want to gamble on one shot to pull some super cool Griffey Jr. 1/1 auto, when it's more like they'll pull something lamer like a Salvador Perez auto numbered out of 10.

  6. I would love to have something similar for my Hensley Meulens collection. For my Dave Winfield collection, however, I would view it as lazy, overpriced junk.

  7. In terms of box breaking, it's a huge risk. However I've been picking up lots of these autographs at very affordable prices, because I like the concept of them. Plus the checklist is filled with a variety of fan favorites.

  8. The concept is brilliant and in hand they're sharp as well. I busted a "box" and was disappointed with a low number Vinny Castilla, however I was able to pick up an El Duque on comc at a fraction of the cost of the "hobby box" containing the Castilla. For sixty beans I would have appreciated a pack of unautographed buybacks to go along with my opportunity to pull a 1/1 all timer auto. Topps could have gone so many directions with a bonus pack, the chance at pulling a second auto or an original vintage gem, or an original set, throw us a freakin' bone here Topps. Anyhow, the checklist is pretty decent and the cards are awesome encased and stickered as they are. Overall rating: 3.5\5
