Am I a Geek because I love Excel ?

So, I have a love for Excel and some would even call me an Excel geek. So why not combine the love for baseball cards with my love for Excel !! It took a lot of work (and some tips from Jon at Community Gum) and weeks of tweaking but I finally have my Glavine collection in Excel. So how is this fun you may ask ? Well, I now finally have a good overview of which cards I have and which cards are missing and the fun part is that I can do some data-mining as well !!

Here's the my first summary !!

Not sure about you but I think this is great, love to have some "control" over my collection and be able to track my progress ! Some other observations:

- There are more than 6,000 different Glavine cards !!
- I only have less 20% of these so 80% more to go !!
- I suspect the Printing Plate overview is not complete yet so some work to do there !!
- A 1,000 1/1's...how can one ever complete this :-))

All in all, will kepp everyone posted with my progress !! Step 2 is now to build one for Kershaw and Blyleven and if I have energy left maybe do one for Sabathia, Rivera and Rizzo as well.

This hobby is hard work but that's fine as long as we are having fun !! Thanks for visiting my blog today !!

  1. I'm using Excel to track all my expenditures this year (hobby related). I've got money in and out, where from, and how much... You are in good company!

    1. I am still at a stage I don't want to track my expenditure as it might start to depress me :-))

  2. I use either Excel or Google Docs for just about anything that's worth keeping track. I like Google Docs because of its versatility in being able to post live spreadsheets to my blog.

    2. I use the Google Docs as well because it has an app and I can look at my lists on my phone which is handy when I'm at card shops or shows.

  3. My use of Excel ventures far into the crazy. One example:

Also, for the football contest I have on my blog right now, I'm keeping track of the whole season in excel. I even have an automated stat sheet that includes Points For, Points Against, +/-, Wins, Losses, and win%...and each one has home and away splits. I'm also tracking in-conference and in-division records for tiebreaks.

Additionally, I have all my player collections in excel, with my Scott Sizemore collection in an advanced spreadsheet that has all of my auto/relic/#ed stats for exists/owned and splits for every print run (1/1, #/5, #/10...etc.)

I work extensively with excel at work, so it naturally flows into other stuff. I tend to build excel workbooks (such as the BoxBreakers) in MATLAB. Once you get to that point, you become a supergeek.

Shoot, I even have MATLAB tools for building a PDF report of my Scott Sizemore collection. I'm that pitiful.

By the way, great spreadsheet. I've found mine useful, so I'm sure you'll enjoy yours. You should set something up to track rainbows. Using colorscales to show how close to completion you are for given sets. Of course, with Glavine having so many cards, it may not be worth the effort.

  4. I use Excel for my office work (only about 20% of my workly duties) and then come right home and use it more simply as a cataloging tool.

It's a wonderful tool, and you have no idea how powerful it can be.

  7. I use Excel for my collection, too. But I know virtually nothing about calculating stuff from it.

  8. Excel is awesome! I don't use it much for my collection, but you can do a ton of cool stuff with it!
